What Size Canvas Print Should I Order? A Complete Guide

So you’ve got the perfect photo, and you’re ready to turn it into a canvas, but now you’re staring at a list of sizes and wondering which one to pick. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Choosing the right canvas print sizes is one of the most common questions we get, and honestly, it’s easier than it seems once you know what to look for.

This guide walks you through everything you need to know to pick the right size with confidence.

Start With the Wall, Not the Photo

The biggest mistake people make when ordering a canvas print is choosing a size based on gut feeling rather than the actual wall space they’re working with. Before you even think about sizes, grab a tape measure and figure out how much wall space you have to fill.

A good rule of thumb: your canvas should fill about two-thirds to three-quarters of the wall width it’s hanging on. So if your wall is 60 inches wide, you’re looking at a canvas somewhere in the 36–45 inch range. Going too small on a large wall is a really common mistake; the canvas ends up looking lost.

Room-by-Room Size Recommendations

Different rooms call for different sizes. Here’s a quick breakdown based on what we see works best:

Living Room

This is usually the place for your biggest statement piece. We’d recommend going with a 36×2424×36, or even our Triple 12×36 triptych if you have a wide wall above a sofa or fireplace. These sizes have real presence and look stunning with family photos or landscapes.

Bedroom

Above a bed, a 36×24 works great for a wide headboard, or a 24×36 if you want something tall and portrait-oriented. For a nightstand wall or smaller space, a 16×20 or 11×14 is a nice fit.

Hallway or Entryway

Hallways are great for tall, narrow prints. A 16×24 portrait or a 36×12 panoramic both work really well in long, narrow spaces. If you have a stairwell wall, a series of smaller prints like our 12×12 squares creates a great gallery wall effect.

Home Office or Kids Room

Something in the medium range tends to work best; a 16×20 or 14×11 fits nicely without overwhelming a smaller space. Our 12×12 square is also a fun option for kids’ rooms and desk areas.

Portrait vs. Landscape — Which Should I Choose?

This one’s simple: match the orientation of your photo. If your photo is taller than it is wide (like most portrait-style photos taken with a phone held vertically), go with a portrait orientation like the 16×24 or 24×36. If it’s wider than it is tall, think vacation landscapes, group photos, or anything shot horizontally, go landscape with something like the 20×16 or 36×24.

The one exception is the square sizes (12×12 and 24×24), which work with almost any photo and look especially great for tightly cropped shots or pet portraits.

Not Sure? Don’t Guess — Just Ask

If you’ve measured your wall, looked through the size chart, and you’re still not sure, that’s completely fine. We’re a small family business, and we’re happy to help you figure it out. Just head over to our free quote page and tell us a little about your space. We’ll point you in the right direction.

💡 Pro tip: Cut out a piece of newspaper or painter’s tape to the size you’re considering and hold it up against the wall. It sounds simple, but actually seeing the dimensions in your space makes the decision a lot easier.

What About Photo Resolution?

One thing that holds people back from ordering larger sizes is worrying that their photo won’t be high enough resolution to look good. It’s a valid concern, but it’s less of a problem than you might think. Our uploader automatically checks your image’s DPI when you upload, and if your photo needs a boost, our AI photo enhancement tool can sharpen and upscale it before we print. So even if you’re working with an older phone photo, there’s a good chance we can make it work beautifully.

The uploader will let you know if there’s a quality issue before you add to cart, so you’ll never be left guessing.
